The Over Benchil Stone

Just north of Luncarty on the A9 is a turning to the right for Stanley. Drive up this road and over to your right very soon you will see the stone standing in front of Over Benchil Farm. Ask permission to view, I found this was readily granted.

This wonderful monolith, over 8 feet tall and aligned roughly E-W, has suffered the indignity of having had a red sandstone sundial plonked on top of it at some point in the past. Unfortunately this is difficult to ignore, and rather ruins what would otherwise be a magnificent megalith. The views are pretty stunning from here, even on a cold wet November day. Visited 13/11/02.
